Have Plumbing Problems? You Must Read These Tips!

Posted on August 20, 2019October 9, 2019

Professional plumbing is often a very expensive service, and usually the work that is done is something that any homeowner could solve fairly easily with the proper knowledge and tools. If you’d like to start learning to solve your own plumbing problems, read on to see what you can do.

If a pipe ever freezes, you need to make sure to shut off the water. This will keep the pipe from bursting and causing you major damage to your home. Make sure to shut the water off at the main valve, and then open the faucet that is closest to the frozen pipe so it can drain while it is thawing out.

Ensure that everyone in your household knows how to turn off the main water supply, or knows how to contact someone who can. In the event of a burst pipe or other water-related emergency, you should immediately turn off the water to prevent flooding, structural damage, and a sky-high water bill.

If your pipes are prone to freezing, let the water trickle continuously in at least one faucet during weather that is below freezing. This will minimize the chances that the pipes will freeze and leave you without water. If water is continually running through the pipes and trickling out of a faucet, the pipes are less likely to freeze.

Unclog drains with ease. Try using a plunger and drain cleaner, as your clog may simply be a build-up of hair and debris. If this doesn’t work you may have to clear the drain with a snake. Feed the snake into the drain line as far as it will go. Turn the crank gently, which will help to loosen the clog. Remove the snake, and run water down the drain to see if the clog has been removed. You may have to use the snake a couple of times, before the clog is cleared so don’t give up!

Inspect around the toilets for softness in the floors to see if any damage has occurred. Stand over the toilet, then rock it back and forth to see if any weakening in the floor has occurred. Picking up on any problems now will definitely work to save you money later. It’s the difference in a little maintenance and total floor replacement.

Keep grease, fat and oil out of your kitchen drain. When they cool, they’ll harden and clog your drain. This is especially damaging to garbage disposals because the fat can make the blades turn more slowly and less efficiently. Be sure to get rid of oil products away from your sink.

When changing your shower head, replace it with one of good quality. Some people think it’s alright to get the cheapest head for your shower in the store. Like many cheap products, however, cheap shower heads are often not durable.

As you can see, plumbing isn’t as difficult as you may have believed. Many plumbing problems can be solved easily with things on hand, or with a few inexpensive parts. Next time you have a problem with your plumbing, try using the tips in this article to solve it yourself!…
